Cottco Rugby Under Floodlights
The biggest schools’ rugby festival in the southern hemisphere is upon us. This year’s Cottco Schools’ rugby festival is even bigger, with more schools – including touring sides – taking part at the Prince Edward-hosted festival. To accommodate everyone, some games are going to played in the evening under floodlights.
Work to install floodlights around the Jubilee Field at Prince Edward has already begun and should be completed in time for the first games of the festival which kicks off on the 29th of April on various fields at the 115 years old school. The festival runs until the 4th of May.
This year’s Cottco Schools rugby festival will however not be the first school’s rugby event to witness night games. The Hellenic Catsicas rugby tournament which features various junior schools from across the country has played witness to floodlit rugby action for a number of years now. The fixtures for the festival have not been released yet, so we can not ascertain how deep into the evening the games will be going.
FrontrowZim contacted the festival director, Sebastian Garikayi and he confirmed the development. ”This is something we are putting in place to accommodate everyone since we received a lot of registrations this year.” Asked about the security Garikayi responded, “We have triplicated our security force and put logistics in place to make sure the festival progresses smoothly.”
Going forward, this is a welcome development to Zimbabwean rugby. It raises the number of fields the Zimbabwe Rugby Union has at its disposal for some of those inbound senior provincial and national tours. In the coming schools’ rugby season, spectators might have to brave the cold winter nights if some of the Prince Edward Tigers’ home games are played under floodlights. This will be due prior to arrangements but I’m sure most schools will welcome night games as the cold will definitely deplete that loud and fierce “Tigers” support around the Jubilee field.
