Monday games at the annual Cottco Schools Rugby Festival have never been crowd pullers but this year’s edition turned out different. The terraces around the Jubilee field with backs against Avenues field were fully occupied at various times during the opening day of the Cottco Schools Rugby Festival.
The teams on show did not disappoint the crowds even though some of them might have suffered heart break on the field. One such team is the Kyle College second string which lost 7-5 to St Ignatius College. Though clinical in their attack, the boys from Masvingo had a torrid time trying to break the St Ignatius defensive line. Earlier in the day Chinhoyi High School kept Cranborne Boys at bay managing to hold to a 3-0 lead well in to the second half. Chinhoyi came under attack in the last 12 minutes of the game and they crumbled allowing Cranborne boys to go over the whitewash 3 times to secure a 19-3 victory.
This year’s edition of the festival sees more girls’ teams competing in what is the biggest youth rugby tourney in the world making it more than just a fashion fair for the girl child. Vainona Girls maintained a clean sheet against Roosevelt Girls winning a convincing 46-0 in their lunch-time encounter while Eaglesvale went down 32-5 to Girls High.
