Over the weekend Eaglesvale Senior School will play hosts to over 20 schools for the Mark Manolios Hockey Festival. The festival will feature under 19 boys’ teams from all over the country. Some will endure long bus rides from places as far as Chiredzi, Bulawayo and Mutare to come and join in the fun that is hockey.
The games kick-off at 2.00 pm on Friday 17 May 2013 and run until Sunday morning. A festival select side to be put together by the selectors will play against a Mark Manolios invitational squad at 10.00 am on Sunday . This year’s festival features some teams that have only recently introduced hockey and this is a great indicator of growth for the sport in Zimbabwe .

Mark Manolios – the festival’s namesake – expressed a lot of gratitude to the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe for naming the festival after him. “I feel greatly honoured, this usually happens after someone is dead,” Manolios told FrontRowZim.com. Having played Prince Edward first team hockey in 1955, Manolios has been forever involved in Zimbabwean hockey. He coached Zimbabwe’s national men’s team from 1970 t0 1985.
The ultimate winner at the festival will be Zimbabwe hockey as teams will not get points for a win. A best all-round trophy will be presented on Sunday. The trophy will be awarded based on discipline on and off the playing field and sportsmanship. Mark Manolios Sports will also award gift vouchers for various player awards that will be decided on by the umpires and the coaches.
