Saints, Tigers In Crucial Clash

Prince Edward and St George’s – the only unbeaten 1st teams on the local rugby scene so far this year – clash on Saturday on Weaver Field at St George’s College.

St George’s College almost achieved an unbeaten run last season but Peterhouse Boys were the party spoilers, edging them 23 – 20 in the last fixture of the term in Marondera. The “Tigers” of Prince Edward last enjoyed an unbeaten run in 2000 with a team that featured the likes of Peiter Benade, Gordon Pangeti and Tonderai Chavhanga. Pangeti and Chavhanga went on to play in the Under 21 World Cup for South Africa, managed by Jake White in 2003.

A win for either side will mean that only one team can go on and try to maintain its unbeaten record while a draw will favour both teams. The 100-year-old rivalry between the two teams makes a stalemate highly unlikely, even though it’s still a possibility.

In other league matches, Churchill comes back into action after a bye weekend to face Christian Brothers College while the wounded “Maddogs” of Falcon date St John’s College in Harare. Kyle College will be looking to win their first match for the season when they host Peterhouse Boys in Masvingo.

In the Co-Ed league, Eaglesvale host Lomagundi College while Gateway travel to Mutare for a clash against Hillcrest College. Buoyed by their win against Hillcrest, Hellenic Academy will be looking to register another win against Watershed College at home. First team log leaders Midlands Christian College take a break from the league as they face Plumtree in an away friendly encounter. Petra also break from the league with a fixture against Milton.
