Eaglesvale Sinks Lomagundi

Newton Tanyanyiwa, Eaglesvale eighth-man scored the opening try as well as the last one in their 45 – 10 drubbing of Lomagundi College at Eaglesvale on Saturday 8 June.

The encounter was down on the cards as some sort of reunion since the two teams last played together in 2006 at Lomagundi in a fixture that had to be cut short due to a brawl that broke out during the game. Thankfully this time around both teams were only out to enjoy a game of rugby.

The hosts’ pack – arguably one of the biggest in schools rugby this year – made their presence felt all over the park. They dominated the opposition’s line-out throws as well as the scrums to set-up clean ball for their pint-sized scrum-half, Sean Mwayera. Lomagundi captain Denzyl Simbi was not going down without a fight and he had the spectators on their feet as he danced his way through the Eaglesvale defence all the way from his 10 metre line to dive over in the corner for his teams’ second try.

After the break Eaglesvale continued with the assault and turned the game into a one-sided encounter. Tafadzwa Kuseri scored Eaglesvale’s fourth try to secure the bonus points on offer. Skipper Simbi suffered a calf injury and had to be carried of the field 8 minutes into the second half. Without him the Lomagundi “Bisons” crumbled to a 45 – 10 loss.

The win takes Eaglesvale to the top of the 1XV’s log table. Midlands is in position 2 based on points difference but with a game to spare.

In other Co-Ed league matches played Gateway suffered their third defeat of the season to Hillcrest going down 13 – 51 at home. Watershed managed to keep Hellenic arm’s length away in a close encounter played in Harare. The game ended Hellenic 22, Watershed 26.
