Zimbabwe Breaks Griquas CD’s Hearts

The Zimbabwe Innscor Young Sables delivered a shocker this afternoon, coming from behind to win 15-12 against Griquas Country Districts at the ongoing Grant Khomo Week at the Isak Steyl Stadium in South Africa.

Griquas CD dominated the first half scoring a converted try at the three-minute mark courtesy of eighth-man Reinhard Hayes. It took 24 minutes for the Zimbos to open their scoring account  through hooker Jeff Makoni but they were still trailing 7-5 as Campbill Nyakudya pulled the conversion wide. At the death of the first-half speedster Willrich Delie scored another try for Griquas CD to leave the tourists trailing 12-5 at the break.

A rejuvenated Zimbabwean side came on after the break and succeeded in keeping their try-line unbreached. The young lads showed great character after Shaun Snyder missed a penalty that would have added 3 more points to their tally by regrouping well and sticking as a unit. Antoni Ciampi went over the white wash to score Zimbabwe’s second try and Campbell Nyakudya’s coolly taken conversion leveled things up at 12 all with only six minutes to play.

Not moving an inch backwards, the Young Sables defended their line well. The crowd at Isak Steyl stadium was treated to a nervy finish as Griquas CD conceded a penalty with only a minute to play. Winger Takudzwa Gamanya is the man who stood over that penalty, going for posts and kept his composure as he struck it well to bring Zimbabwe up for the first time in the match.

Zimbabwe plays Limpopo Blue Bulls tomorrow at 14:15. The technical team – Douglas Travella, Sebastian Garikayi and Shaun De Souza – will be hoping the boys come to the party and register another win.
