Young Sables Are The Best

The Zimbabwe Young Sables are currently enjoying top position on the Craven Week log table above Border and Western Province, who are in second and third place respectively.

The Young Sables have a total of 10 points from two wins. A win at craven week is four points, but Zimbabwe earned two bonus points from both games for scoring four or more tries in each encounter. In the first match Zimbabwe scored four tries courtesy of Munyaradzi Mashaya, Jabulani Mutukwa and Brendon Mandivenga. Mutukwa scoring a brace in that first match. Against Limpopo Blue Bulls, The Young Sables scored six tries to earn their second bonus point at this year’s Craven Week.

Zimbabwe’s defence has also seen them conceding the least tries – three – at the 50th Craven Week so far along with Free State who have only conceded three tries as well. Two of the tries that were scored against Zimbabwe came during the 10 minutes that Ivan Bawden had been sent to the sin bin, against Griquas. In Bawden’s absence, the Young Sables struggled to maintain their defensive structures and the opposition capitalised.

Utility-back, Brendon Mandivenga, is Craven Week’s top scorer heading into day three of the tourney. Mandivenga has two tries to his name, as well as eight conversions and four penalties, totaling 38 points. Chris Arries of Namibia is in fifth place with 27 points.

Zimbabwe’s performance at this year’s Craven Week has earned them a fixture on the main field at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium against Namibia on Saturday morning. In recent years, the Young Sables have always played their Saturday fixture on the “B” or “C” field.

Zimbabwe’s best finish in the history of Craven Week was when the Young Sables finished third with three wins in 2007. Daniel Moolman will want to make history when he leads his charges on to the park on Saturday in search of a first place finish.
