Lake Ready To Lead Zim U19 In Visakhapatnam

Zimbabwe U19 cricket captain, Malcom Lake will lead his charges in a quadrangular series being hosted by India from September 23 to October 5, 2013. Zimbabwe will face Australia, India and neighbours South Africa, during the 13-day tournament.

Lake, who first made the U19 side when he was aged 15, believes the squad has put in enough effort and time into their preparations and

they will be major contenders in India. “We have put extra time to work on our game and we should do well in India,” said Lake.

Yassin Valli, South Africa’s skipper is however, not counting Zimbabwe’s presence and is looking forward to playing India and Australia. “We’re going to face the top two teams in the world (India and Australia respectively) and we can’t wait to get started,” said Valli as qouted by a South African schools’ sports website.

St George’s College student Jack Myers who is one of the five schoolboys in the team says, “We are not going there with an upset in mind, I believe our skill level is at par with the other teams, so they really shouldn’t look at us as underdogs.” Zimbabwe’s “below par” performance in last year’s ICC U19 World Cup is probably the reason why their opponents are taking them lightly.

India will however, know what to expect when they play Zimbabwe as the U19 Zim captain, Lake, gave them a lot of trouble in Australia, scoring 118 runs off 107 balls made up of 10 fours and 5 sixes. “I would love to do that again, but this time for a winning cause. The focus will be to get the team to play together for wins,” said Lake.

The team departs for Visakhapatnam, India this week on Thursday September 19 and we wish them well.
