St John’s College were capped 2013 champions of the two-day Papyrus-sponsored U16 Invitational Basketball tournament which was held at St George’s College in Harare, over the weekend. It was a tightly-contested final match, which saw the Rams slightly edging the hosts 19-18 to emerge winners.
A total of 19 schools participated in the tournament. St George’s College fielded an A and B side bringing the total number of teams to 20. Schools that took part in the basketball extravaganza include Petra High, St John’s High, Howard High, Mufakose High, St John’s College, Eaglesvale, Christian Brothers College, Kutama College, Peterhouse Boys, Lomagundi College, Westridge High, St Ignatius’ College, Goldridge College, Falcon College, Watershed College, Kyle College, Prince Edward School and Murewa High.
The teams were further divided into four pools. The quarter-final matches saw Mufakose beat St Ignatius 27-16, St John’s College defeated PE 25-16. Saints A beat Peterhouse 24-15 and Kutama College “hammered” Falcon 29-6. Despite their quarter-final win over Falcon, Kutama did not proceed to the semi-finals as they were disqualified from partaking in the rest of the tournament for having fielded an overaged player(s).
In the semi-final matches, the Saints A team defeated Mufakose High, while the young Rams edged out the boys from Esigodini, setting up a “Harare derby” final. The two sides put up a good show and did not disappoint, with St John’s College outplaying their hosts by half a basket to win the tourney.
As the tournament was sponsored by Papyrus stationers, all boys who played in the tournament got Papyrus-branded t-shirts and notepads. St George’s College are to be commended for hosting a well-organised tournament.
