Zimbabwe Preps For World Cup

The Zimbabwe squad that is set play in next year’s World Cup in Dubai will be part of Cubs week down south in Stellenbosch from the fifth of January to the ninth.

The tournament is the only engagement for the team as a unit thus far in preparation for the World Cup and will most likely be the only one. Zimbabwe Cricket had a chance to send the side to India for the Quadrangular Series that also featured South Africa and Australia and the hosts but instead, the union went with a more experienced side that featured a number of players who will not be eligible for the event in Dubai.

The U19 Cubs Week is a tournament for franchises but the Zimbabwe U19 and South Africa U17 squads will also be part of the fun in Stellenbosch. Other teams to play during the week are Bizhub Highveld Lions, Chevrolet Knights, Chevrolet Warriors, Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras, The Unlimited Titans and Sunfoil Dolphins.

Though it seems like just another provincial South African tournament that runs for a week, the tourney will do Zimbabwe a lot of good towards gearing up for the World Cup. A number of the boys drafted for the franchises taking part will also put on the green and gold for South Africa in Dubai come February 14. South Africa’s U19 skipper, Yassin Valli will play for the Bizhub Highveld Lions.

We wish the boys well in Stellenbosch and hope that they will be well prepared for the World Cup in Dubai. Do you think Zimbabwe Cricket can do more to help prepare the boys during the run up to the event in Dubai? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
