Running in its second year, the Arundel Invitational track and field meet saw a number of new records being set. The meet took place at the Mt Pleasant school on Friday (February-28) afternoon.
Hellenic Academy’s Gabrielle de Chassart ran an electric 3000m in a new meet record time of 11,31.4 minutes in the junior 3000m run. Gabrielle’s record was quicker than the new meet record of 12,08.78 set for the senior 3000m run by M Bell of Chisipite.
In the javelin throw, Amber Scott of Peterhouse set a new meet record of 32,57 metres in the U20 girls division. Another new meet record was set by Chisipite’s Chelsea Karimazondo in the U17 girls javelin throw, with a throw of 23,42 metres.
As the afternoon came to a close, Chisipite Senior Schooll led the points table, claiming the cup with 146 points. Hellenic placed second with only four points ahead of hosts – Arundel – who scored 121 points. Peterhouse Girls came fourth with 111 points ahead of fifth placed Arundel B who collected 76 points.
If you by any chance watched Derek Redmond break down at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona you would have been reminded of Redmond’s heroic finish on Friday afternoon at Arundel. Esther Mano – Arundel student – pulled a hamstring during the senior 3000m run and everyone would have forgiven her for walking to the Finish line or just not finishing her race, but she carried on. Joined by her coach on the last lap of the run, Mano received a standing ovation from her peers and parents in the stands.
