Team Zimbabwe for the Youth Olympics scheduled for this August keeps growing and the latest addition to the team are two tri-athletes Serena Rendell and Drew Williams. The two were part of the Zimbabwe team that fared well at the South Africa Triathlon Championships that took place in Amathole, East London on the March 23.
Peterhouse Girls’ Serena Rendell finished fifth in a time of 1 hour 14 minutes and 43 seconds, earning the much deserved ticket to Nanjing, China. Drew Williams of St John’s College also had a good showing coming home in third place to earn the privilege of representing Zimbabwe in China this August. Drew stopped the clock at 1 hour 3 minutes and 22 seconds just 18 seconds behind South Africa’s Nathan Le Roux.
Other tri-athletes who were hoping to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games but missed the mark are, Gideon Benade who finished his race placed eighth and Helen Mitchelle and Skye Davidson who finished in eighth and sixth respectively.
Zimbabwe’s showing was impressive at the SA triathlon championships and to add to the joy three promising prospectives medalled in their respective races. Celia Erlank from Peterhouse Girls scored a bronze medal in the U17 girls division while Hellenic’s Taine Roelofsz won silver in the U15 boys division.
Gabrielle de Chasart who has been an outstanding through-out the cross-country season for Hellenic scooped the gold madel in the under 15 girls division coming home in a time of 37 minutes and 50 seconds.
