“It is therefore my pleasure ladies and gentlemen to announce that the festival will be named Dairibord Schools Rugby Festival and will run from the fifth to the tenth of May 2014” said Dairibord Zimbabwe Private Limited(DZPL) managing director,Thompson Mabika to much applause just before the signing of the three year contract for the schools rugby festival yesterday(April 9) evening at Prince Edward School.
The festival had run under the Cottco banner for the past 15 years. Cottco contract lapsed last year and in the words of DZPL managing director, “Dairibord latched on to the chance to be associated with the festival.”
In response to a question from the floor on Dairibord jumping on board to sponsor the festival after the event had so much bad publicity in some parts of the media last year. The MD explained that they(DZPL) were not fazed by the reports and that the most important thing for them was to be involved in the development of a healthier nation with sport being a great driver in that respect. In addition, he leaned over and looked at the audience from over the frame of his spectacles and said in mellow voice, “they are our children.”
The sentiments of that statement were also echoed moments later by one of the brand managers from DZPL, Sandra Dodo who affirirmed that, “In supporting school sports you are targeting children and supporting them is like sowing a seed.”
DZPL could not disclose figures for the sponsorship yet but Thompson Mabika confirmed that it will be upwards of $US120 000.00. That valuation being a bench mark from last year.
