The St George’s Under 15 rugby team completed a successful tour to South Africa with a 17-5 loss to Guildford College on Saturday morning.
The young “Dragons” were in South Africa for the Independent Schools Rugby Festival at Kingswood College. The Festival featured 12 South African teams and one from Guildford College in UK and our own St George’s College to make up the 14 teams.
The festival kicked off on April 16 and St George’s made it through the day unbeaten drawing 5 all against St Benedict’s College before registering a narrow but deserved 7-3 win against St David’s Inanda later in the day.
Convincing wins were posted by the young “Dragons” on day 2 of the festival: 24-0 against CBC Boksburg and 26-17 against Clifton School. It was St Alban’s College turn to face the wrath of the Zimbos on the last day of the festival losing 12-7 in a tightly contested match.
The last match for St George’s at Kingswood was against the UK side, Guildford Rugby who put on an excellent display of rugby to deny the young “Dragons” an unbeaten tour handing them a disappointing 17-5 defeat.
Overall that’s 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss for the St George’s Under 15 side in their first appearance at the Independent Schools Rugby Festival in South Africa. This will go a long way in preparing the young lads for the upcoming rugby season as junior teams don’t usually enjoy any game time during the pre-season, later on against good opposition like South African schools and Guildford Rugby.
