Zim’s Late Barrage Upsets Border Country Districts

In brilliant fashion, the Old Mutual U13 Young Sables came from behind to edge Border Country Districts 31-27 in a match played on Tuesday morning at the ongoing U13 Coca-Cola Craven Week at Glenwood High School in Durban.

Zimbabwe trailled 14-27 going into the halftime break and it seemed as if the game was in the bag for Border Country Districts. Nataizya Chininga got on the board for Zimbabwe as early as the third minute, with Rukudzo Munyeza picking up the two extra points from the conversion. In response Border CD scored three unanswered tries, two of them converted to take the lead.

Scrummie, Rukudzo Munyeza kept Zimbabwe’s hope afloat when he went over for a try with five minutes left to play before the break. Munyeza stood over the kick and sent it through the uprights to bring the scores to 14-17 to Border CD.

Border CD scored two tries in quick succession to extend their lead  to 27-14. The missed conversions would come back to haunt the Country Districts lads in the second half.

Zimbabwe kept Border CD scoreless in the second half while patiently chipping away the point deficit. Rory Plunket was first to go over the whitewash after the break and Munyeza was once again on point with a true kick. Pacey centre Munashe Chaitezvi went over for another Zimbabwe try but it was a tough one for Munyeza to convert leaving the scores at 26-27.

Had the match ended like this Munyeza would have been a hero turned villain for scoring a try and slotting in three kicks before missing the kick that would have won his country the game. Munyeza had another go at the posts from a penalty but missed is again.

With three minutes left to play the scoreboard read 26-27. Two minutes to play, no change. In the last minute of play, Falcon College’s pint sized Tanaka Mukanya went over to win it for Zimbabwe. The board was updated as the Old Mutual Young Sables walked off the park.
