Zimbabwean rower Daniella Du Toit finished second in the third repêchage single scull race on Monday, keeping Zimbabwe’s medal hopes alive on the second day of the Youth Olympic Games currently underway in China.
Du Toit, a student at Chisipite Senior, had a terrific race, finishing in second place with a time of 3:50.78 just behind Bulgaria’s Desislava Georgieva, who clocked a time of 3:50.42. The second place finish secured a spot for Du Toit in the second A/B semifinal set for tomorrow. Zimbabwe has been drawn in lane six for the second semi-final alongside France, Lithuania, Norway, Greece and Great Britain.
A top three finish in tomorrow’s race will see Du Toit go through to the Finals A, a step closer to a medal for Team Zimbabwe, while a 4-6 finish will move her to the Finals B race which will determine places 7-12.
The other Zimbabwean rower at the Youth Games, Kyle Hinde of St John’s College, missed the cut for the A/B Finals, finishing sixth in his repêchage race to move on to the C/D semi-finals. Hinde will be hoping for a top three finish in his race in order to proceed to the C Final where position 13-18 will be determined.
Daniella Du Toit’s semi-final race commences at 10:10 am Nanjing time. If you want to rally behind Du Toit and you’re in Zimbabwe, keep in mind that Harare’s time zone is six hours behind.
