The St George’s Regatta, at Mazowe Dam on 21 September, was well organized and attended with competitors in 30 separate races spanning Class A to Class D competitions in single, double and four person coxed skull categories.
Seven high schools fielded teams in the Sunday regatta: Arundel, Chisipite, Girls High, Peterhouse Boys and Girls, Prince Edward and hosts St George’s. Hunyani Rowing Club also participated, providing some stiff competition from Zimbabwe’s top adult rowers for the pupils on the windy Mazowe Dam.
Peterhouse Boys is working hard on rowing development to interest their young boys in the sport. The Class D (beginners) 500m single scull race was between five competitors all from Peterhouse, with T. Matasva crossing the line first in a time of 3:07.7 ahead of four other Petreans.
Fresh from Nanjing, Youth Olympian Daniella du Toit was in top form on Sunday. Du Toit came second in the Class A 1500m race 20.5 seconds behind Olympian, Micheen Thornycroft, and finished with a time of 5:56.4. Du Toit also won the Class A double skull 1500m race with H. Zwanikken in a time of 5:53.8 in a tight race just ahead of another Chisipite team led by M. Dickens.
