A spirited performance saw hosts Harare International School(HIS) see off Prince Edward 2-1 in the final of the Classic U19 Volleyball tournament held at Harare International School on Saturday.
Prince Edward edged Peterhouse 2-1 in the semi-finals to move a step closer to claiming the title while HIS made light work of Mazoe in the second semi-final winning 2-0. A total of eight teams, including HIS were expected to take part in the boys pool of the competition but Allan Wilson didn’t pitch hence Pool A was left with three teams; HIS, Peterhouse Boys and St John’s High School. Pool B remained unchanged with Mazoe, Starz Academy, Prince Edward and Mufakose 2.
Mufakose 2 was the team to beat in the girls pool as they went on to win the semi-final and final in straight sets. Peterhouse Girls took all the heat from Mufakose 2 in the semi before Roosevelt came into line of fire in the final. Roosevelt went through to the final after accounting for HIS girls in a high octane first semi-final which ended 2-1. HIS managed to clinch the first set 25-23 but crumbled in the follow up sets as they lost one of their key attackers to an elbow injury. The other four girls’ teams that did not make it to the semi-finals were St John’s High, Arundel, Chisipite and Starz Academy.
Harare International School will again play hosts later this month when they welcome seven other international schools from the region for a volleyball tournament. After the victory on Saturday, the HIS boys will start the international tourney upbeat and the girls should be equally confident as they have time to strengthen their weaknesses.
