Day 4: Gabriel Sipapate Wins Team Zim’s First Gold Medal

Churchill boys high student Gabriel Sipapate managed to rack in the first gold medal for Zimbabwe in the under 100kg in Judo which was held at Zimbabwe International Trade Fair during the on-going African Union Region 5 Games.

The 19 year old athlete who could not hide his joy confessed that he was happy that his hard work had finally paid off. “I am targeting to be the best sports personality in the world, I have realised that l have natural talent in the sporting arena and l plan on discovering more of my hidden talents and let them shine.

“I only started training judo this year and to be honest l gave it my best; am thrilled that it finally paid off in the end. I am proud to be the first gold medallist for Zimbabwe and am confident we will get more and win the tournament in our own backyard,” added Sipapate.

The talented prop is skyrocketing in the sporting arena as this year has got him a double dose of achievement. Earlier being awarded a full scholarship early this year by KwaZulu Natal-based Sharks Academy of South Africa, where he is expected to join the fancied rugby academy next January.
