Angola beat Mozambique in boys’ U17 football this afternoon in what was an electric match between the Portuguese speaking nations of SADC. Fireworks were expected as both countries’s football associations have embarked on serious grassroots football development.
Angola entered the game wounded from an unanticipated loss against Malawi earlier in the Region 5 tournament.
The first twenty minutes the game was all about physical strength. The Angolan marksmen while showing tactical prowess, wasted chance after chance at the goal .Mozambique were clearly outplayed. As Angola missed chances, Mozambique were attacking at the very leaky Angolan defense. However, both sides failed to score in the first half.
The second half saw the Angolan defense making mistakes and Mozambique play lacking enthusiasm and confidence. The Mozambican goalie conceded in the 74th minute after some good play from the left flank by Angolans. But with 15 minutes left to play, the Angolans were not settling for a single goal.
At 87 minutes of play, an Angolan player was yellow carded for a reckless tackle. As it was his second booking, he was sent off the field, leaving Angola with 10 men. Mozambique failed to capitalize on their new advantage and conceded a second goal 2 minutes later.
The Mozambican official clearly saddened by the events left the terraces amidst cheers from the crowd. Angola finished the game 2-0
