Zimbabwe’s Valeria Bhunu, is confident she will grab the next gold medal for Zimbabwe after securing her place in the finals at BAC in the on-going African Union Region 5 Games earlier today.
Bhunu proved to be a force to reckon with when she outclassed South African Caitlin Herb and bagged the match by a formidable 6-1 6-1.
Composed Bhunu said she had faced a bit of competition but was well prepared to clear her way through. “The first two rounds were pretty tough but ok, made me realise that l have to work on a few things in preparation for tomorrow. I am going to go out there tomorrow and do my best and see how it goes, the team has done good although we faced some tough matches. We are definitely going to scoop medals for our country.
Team Zimbabwe tennis coach Freeman Nyamunokora said the performance of the team so far was very impressive, “Valeria put up a good match against Caitlin, she dominated the match. With the performance she put up l am confident that we will come up top in the final. However two other team Zimbabwe representatives Rufaro Chireva and Rodzai Saurombe were overpowered by their opponents but they will now be competing for the bronze medals. We still have a chance in the doubles events where we are also hoping to get the gold medal as well.”
Valeria Bhunu who won the Zimbabwe Open in 2010 at just fifteen years old, will face another South African tennis player, Poluta Kate, in the final. Kate beat Zimbabwean Rufaro Chireva 6-3, 6-2 in the other semi-final match today. Chirewa will meet Herb to battle for the bronze medal. The finals will be played tomorrow at the Bulawayo Athletic Club.
