The Zimbabwe U19 Girls Waterpolo side got off to a flying start last night, winning their opener 13-2 against Boland at the South Africa Schools Waterpolo Tournament taking place at St Stithians College in Johannesburg.
Team captain Roxanne Shepherd of Chisipite Senior School and Natasha Lawson were on target for Zimbabwe, beating the Boland goalie three times each. Bree Catterall and Kesley Hunter each scored a brace with Tyla Walters, Natasha Rusch and Nicole Wallace hurt their opponents more with a goal each. The girls defended well, fizzling out most of Boland attacks before they could pose a threat to Zim’s goalie Katherine Chandler.
This morning Zimbabwe continued with the good form seeing off Kwazulu Natal 7-2 in much tougher contest.
Zimbabwe plays Eastern Province and Central Gauteng later today. The girls will encounter a true test tomorrow when they come up last year’s finalists Western Province at 11.55am before the waterpolo tourney enters the play-off stage.
The tournament runs until Tuesday and the Zimbabwe U19 girls will be hoping to place better than they did last year when they finished third.
