Chisipite Senior School in Harare is set to host the first ever CANA (African Swimming Confederation) Zone IV Youth Water Polo Championships on the 31st of January and 1st of February.
CANA Zone IV is made up of 13 countries, but only Zimbabwe and South Africa will take part in the first Youth Water Polo Championships. Zimbabwe Aquatics Union President Mary Kloppers confirmed in an interview with SSN. “The Zone IV water polo is a follow-on from the swimming which has gone on for several years. At the moment it’s just South Africa and Zimbabwe competing, but we are hoping to encourage more countries to compete and then the tournament will move from country to country.”
South Africa is bringing two boys’ teams and two girls’ teams which will be matched by Zimbabwe’s four teams. Zimbabwe water polo has been on the rise and this event at Chisipite will certainly boost interest in the sport locally. In Zimbabwe, only twelve schools have active water polo programs: Chisipite, Hellenic, St John’s College, St George’s and Prince Edward in Harare, Falcon, CBC, Petra and Girls’ College in Bulawayo as well as Lomagundi, Peterhouse Girls and Boys.
SSN will bring you all the match reports, photo galleries and results from the weekend championships.
