While Falcon and CBC were in Pretoria over Half Term playing water polo, the St John’s College Rams traveled to Grahamstown where they participated in the South African Schools’ St Andrew’s Shield. The Rams played five games in a very competitive pool and finished 8th out of 26 participating schools in the shield section of the championships. The tournament took place at three venues, DSG, Kingswood and St Andrew’s pools, with over 100 matches being played.
Most impressively, St John’s beat one of South Africa’s top water polo powerhouses, Grey College of Bloemfontein in a convincing 10-3 victory.
The Rams from Rolf Valley lost their game against Reddam of Cape Town 2-8 and to Pearson High School of Port Elizabeth in a tight 6-7 match. They then played a tough match against a visiting American side from Westerford, Connecticut which they lost 5-10. The Rams saw better fortune in their later games, winning a match against Stirling of East London 9-5 in addition to the famous 10-3 victory over Grey.
