On a blazing hot day in the outskirts of Harare, Cornway’s first team clashed with Arundel on the Cornway soccer pitch. Arundel was fueled for a win after a devastating 3-1 away loss to old rivals Chisipite Senior School two weeks ago.
Arundel had a strong start going forward and almost took the lead with a cracker of shot from Esther Mano that was unfortunate to hit the woodwork. A blunder in goal by the hosts saw Ropafadzo Korevedzai scoring the opener for Arundel. Dominance stuck with Arundel as they enjoyed ball possession throughout the match, though Cornway, when they had the ball tried to weave through the Arundel defense. Chenai Chikukwa scored Arundel’s second off a beautiful assist leaving it 0-2 at the half.
Both coaches opted to play their starting players and the second half opened without any substitutions. Most of this half was a fierce battle in the midfield between the two teams. Cornway won the ball and ran down the field, tried for a shot on target, but the ball went over the post. Soon Arundel got an opportunity to fast break with a high ball from the captain to a midfielder in the box, who tried to go for goal. She was denied by a handball from Cornway resulting in the referee calling for a penalty. Mano stepped up to take the penalty, and scored. The game ended 0-3 to Arundel.
Arundel’s junior team also enjoyed a good day on the road beating Cornway 2-0 with goals from Thembisile Gausi and Alyssa Makina.
