Harare Province trained hard and pulled out the stops to win the National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH)National Athletics Championships which took place at Southeastern College in Chiredzi last week Thursday and Friday (19/20 March 2015). Student athletes from Harare won a total of 21 gold , nine silver and six bronze medals. Mashonaland East came second with hosts Masvingo in third place.
The meet was used as a qualifier for the COSASA games to take place in Lesotho in April. Over 30 athletes in Chiredzi were identified to make up Team Zimbabwe which will travel to compete in the games.
Provinces rotate hosting the NASH championships and this year was Masvingo’s turn. Temperatures soared to 36 degrees Celcius in the lowveld region during the two day event, and the unrelenting sun caused quite a few of the junior athletes to faint or stop short of finishing events with full ability.
Despite the heat, athletes competed fiercely for their provinces with top performances. Hillcrest College in Mutare had an impressive show in boys’ relays, fielding Manicaland teams which won gold in the 100m, 200m, 400m and medley. Team Harare, which was at the bottom of the medal table in 2014 at the NASH meet held at Peterhouse, trained cohesively at Eaglesvale this past month to bring home gold in relay and individual events from both the girls and boys sides.
