The St Dunstan’s Easter Sports festival in Benoni, running in its second year featured the most Zimbabwean teams of all the Easter Festivals dotted around South Africa. Peterhouse Boys sent a hockey team. Hellenic sent a girls and boys hockey team as well as their rugby squad. Falcon sent a hockey and rugby team while St John’s College was represented by their rugby team.
St George’s College had their rugby first team playing at the Best of the West Easter Festival at Krugersdorp High School.
Easter Hunt Gone Well
St John’s College won all their three games on in Benoni, 12-10 against Hans Moore, 38-3 against Uplands College and 29-5 against Springs Boys. Hellenic Academy boys did not register a single win in rugby losing two games and drawing 10-10 against Springs Boys. However their boys hockey side won two, drew two and lost two during their campaign in Benoni.
Falcon College’s Hockey team did absolutely well winning five out of their six games. In the process Falcon scored 25 goals while only conceding 4. They are definitely a team to watch in the upcoming hockey season.
Peterhouse Boys managed two wins out of five games with their big one coming in the form of a 5 nil win over Heron Bridge Boys.
St George’s opened their hunt well with a 53-5 win over Pretoria Boys High. It should be noted though that this was Boys High’s second team as their 1st XV was playing over the same weekend at the St Stithians Easter Festival. Good display of rugby and that is really how a first team should play against a second team from any school. Unfortunately things went downhill for Saints in their last two games, losing 10-50 to a full strength Waterkloof side before registering another defeat, 29-5 to Monument High School Kwaggas.
Zimbos Light Up Benoni
Falcon College 1st XV were playing at St Dunstan’s Easter for the second time. Last year they registered some close but great wins at the festival and they raised the bar this year. The boys from Esigodini did not only win all their games but won real big. The “Maddogs” 95 – 0 against Benoni High, 36-5 against Hans Moore and 62-0 against Uplands College.
On the hockey field, the Hellenic Academy girls went all out and topped the girls log with four out of five wins conceding only two goals in the process. Hellenic lost the first match to St Dunstan’s 0-2 and never looked back after that winning 5-0 against South Downs College, 4-0 against St Dominic’s, 11-0 against Woodlands College and 6-0 against Heron Bridge Girls.
With a number of teams getting pre-season game time like this we are sure set for an incredible term of winter sports. Well done to all teams that raised Zimbabwe’s flag over the Easter weekend in South Africa.
