The Arundel first team dominated the Astroturf today to take Hellenic 3-1 at home. From the moment play began, the girls from Mt Pleasant controlled ball possession and outplayed their opposition.
Woman of the match was decidedly Arundel F4 student, Kate Lavers, who moved to Zimbabwe from the UK last year, where she played and trained as a forward. Only her second game on the first team, Kate made two of the three goals and assisted the third.
Early in the game, Sharon Kereke used her speed to assist newcomer Lavers to score wide against Hellenic goalkeeper Sam Mare. Shortly afterwards, Sarah Geach showed her dribbling prowess to navigate the length of the turf before passing to Lavers for the second goal. Kereke made the third successful shot just before the half time whistle was called.
Hellenic’s Headboy Fed Bescotti, brought his prefect body to cheer on the Knights. However, in the second half, there was noticeable silence on the Hellenic stands while Arundel’s boarders and younger teams ramped up their distinctive enthusiastic support.
The second-half opened with a series of frustrated attempts at goal and multiple fouls by both sides, tiring from the fast pace of play. Hellenic came out strong in the second half, constantly posing a threat to Arundel’s defence. Constant pressure coming down the right side of the field from Michaela Paliouras and Kendal Revolta led to multiple short corners and missed opportunities. However Syan McCarter finished a great flick from a short corner to register Hellenic’s only goal of the clash.
With the Swallows’ combination of depth and experience led by Captain Tina Elijah together with the speed brought to the team by national sprint stars Rutendo Chimbaru and Sharon Kereke, Arundel looks poised to have a positive season on the turf. Maybe this year they will actually give the other teams a run for their money during the Golden Girls Hockey tournament.
With the break for Mashonaland provincial trials next weekend, Arundel faces their next big league match, against rivals Chisipite on June 6 at home while Hellenic will play Watershed.
