Peterhouse Girls, the defending champions of Golden Girls, are through to the semifinals of the hockey tournament which wraps up tomorrow (2 August 2015) at Arundel School in Harare.
Predicted favorites, the Marondera girls were expected to proceed to the next round of the tournament without much trouble. What is remarkable about their campaign, however, is that they are the only team who have endured the Friday and Saturday pool stages without a single loss.
In their opening match Peterhouse won 3-0 against Girls College Bulawayo. The second match against Kyle proved a bit more challenging for Peterhouse a team with which they drew during the season. Nonetheless, Peterhouse prevailed with a 2-1 victory before running riot against Watershed to post a huge 5-0 victory over their neighbours.
A resurgent Petra side, that has surprised a number of big teams this weekend was dealt a 4-0 defeat in Peterhouse’s fourth game. The last match of the pool stages for Peterhouse proved to be the toughest so far this weekend. Chisipite drew first blood and forced the defending champions to play catch-up which they did well to end the game with a one all draw.
Petra High finished second to Peterhouse in Pool A and they will play winners of Pool B, Gateway in the first semifinal on Sunday morning. Hellenic who finished second in Pool B will face off with Peterhouse in the second semifinal to battle for berth in the coveted Golden Girls final.
Hosts Arundel, hoping to celebrate their 60th anniversary on home turf with a place in the final four, started the tournament strongly on Friday. However, after a narrow 1-0 victory to Eaglesvale this morning, they lost their momentum to tie Gateway one all and then be forced out of the semifinals 0-2 loss Hellenic.
