Peterhouse Girls retained the Golden Girls hockey trophy, rounding off a very successful weekend campaign with a 2-0 win over Petra High in the final at Arundel’s artificial turf on Sunday (2 August 2015) afternoon.
Peterhouse was undefeated throughout the three-day tournament, except for a tied 1-1 match against rivals Chisipite in the pool stages. One of Peterhouse’s pool victories was against Petra who they humbled 4-0. Before the tourney and at that point, no one could guess Petra would meet them again in the final.
Petra came into the final with heads held high, ready to play their best hockey. The girls from Bulawayo indeed played with solid defensive structures and did not allow Peterhouse free rein in front of their goal.
Petra captain, Estelle Stambolie, marshalled her team with great zeal and confidence in front of the 1000+ crowd surrounding the turf to watch the Golden Girls final. However, one goal against them in each half meant they had to settle for silver.
Peterhouse captain, Jessica Dollar, commended her team for their consistent play and hard work throughout the weekend. Dollar admitted that Petra kept them on their toes with their overheads, as they had to work overtime to keep the ball on the ground so they could play the style of hockey with which they are most comfortable.
Hellenic Academy and Gateway High battled for bronze, after Hellenic lost 0-2 to Peterhouse in the morning while Gateway lost 2-3 to Petra. After a tense match ending in a draw, Hellenic’s goalkeeper Androniki Hiripis saved shots which allowed them to be victorious in a penalty shoot-out 4-3 over Gateway to gain the bronze.
The Silver Girls contest was won by Midlands Christian College. Midlands were 4-3 victors over Heritage in a final that had to be decided by penalties. The 2014 Silver Girls victors Hillcrest College this year came third, beating Goldridge 2-0 for the bronze.
