Underdogs, Petra High are through to the final of the Gold Girls to be played later this afternoon(2 August) at Arundel School. Petra will face defending champions and favorites Peterhouse Girls.
The semifinal match between Petra and Gateway was nothing short of riveting. It was pure edge-of-your-seat stuff. After regulation time the scoreboard read nil-all and the winner had to be decided by penalty shoot-outs. Another draw pursued as Gateway and Petra were level at 2-2 after the first round of penalties and the teams went into sudden death.
Petra’s goalie Laurie Sutherland-Macleod held it together and denied Gateway’s Kelly Diplock a shot at goal. Skipper, Estelle Stambolie stepped up to take it and did well to stay calm and bury the goal that made passage for her team in the finals.
“We are very excited, we had hoped for it but we never knew what was coming,” Stambolie told SSN in a post match interview. For the past two years Petra has been finishing 12th in Golden Girls contest and a berth in the final guarantees them a medal, gold or silver.
A 2-0 victory over Hellenic secured Peterhouse’s spot in the final which kicks off at 12:45pm.
