The competitions of the 13th Annual Zimbabwe Youth Games begin tomorrow in Mutare. The games, which convened today with an official Opening Ceremony today in Sakubva Stadium, will see teams from the country’s ten provinces battle it out in eight sporting disciplines. Neighboring Mozambique has also sent a men’s handball and women’s volleyball team to contest, a first in what has previously been a purely Zimbabwean event.
The week’s activities are all free and open to the public. Athletics events will take place at Sakubva Stadium, Basketball and Tennis at Mutare Girls High and Volleyball and Handball at Marymount Teachers’ College. Netball matches will take place at Dangare School in Sakubva and Boxing will be at Mutare Hall. Football will take place at two venues, Sakubva High and Ellis Gladhill School.
Those students who were selected and agreed to go into camp and to participate in the games, had to dedicate most of their August holidays to do so. Thus, some of the nation’s top student athletes are noticeably absent at the Youth Games, given the competition’s timing just before third term and national O, AS and A level exams begin.
