Peter Wetzlar opened his first performance in the World Junior Swimming Championships in Singapore today (25 August) on a high note. Wetzlar, who is Zimbabwe’s only competitor in the U19 championships, earned a personal best time in the 100m backstroke race, bringing his time down from 1.00.11 to 1.00 dead even. Though ranked 48th, he finished 45th in the race of 92 contenders.
Wetzlar, currently studying and swimming at Westville Boys High School in South Africa, will be swimming in four more races over the course of the five day competition which runs 25-30 August and serves as an Olympic qualifying event. Tomorrow (26 August) Wetzlar continues his quest to improve his times with the 100m butterfly race.
