Smashing Cricket Doesn’t Disappoint on Day 2

Not even the overcast and gloomy weather conditions that characterized Day Two (5 September 2015) of the St. Georges T-20 CABS Smashing Cricket Tournament could deter the entertaining brand of cricket that was showcased by the participating schools.

All teams had to raise their respective games in a bid to finish as high up in their pool table as possible to qualify for tomorrow’s trophy and plate matches; the raised stakes increased the level of competition in all of the day’s encounters.

St. Andrews College (SA) and St. Johns (SA) were the two schools that pulled crowds whenever they played given their aggressive style of batting and raw speed with the ball.

Hosts St. George’s made the most of their home conditions as they made light work of their last Pool A fixture against Parktown (SA), winning by a comfortable 50 runs which meant they topped the group after three games played.  As a result, St George’s ended the pool stages at the top of their pool with fifteen points.

In Pool B, St. Andrews finished unbeaten as they posted a mammoth 230 runs in their allotted 20 overs against Parktown (SA) before skittling them all out for just 101 runs to claim an easy 129-run win.  In the other Pool B encounter Falcon eased to a commanding eight-wicket victory in a must-win encounter versus Churchill, giving the Esighodini-based team a second place finish in their group.

St. Johns (SA) emerged unbeaten with fifteen points in Pool C as they barely sweated in affecting an eight wicket win against their namesake, the boys of Borrowdale from St John’s College, Zimbabwe.

The play-offs pitted some very interesting match-ups as teams jostled for the right to compete for either Trophy Finals or Plate Finals come Sunday.  Churchill defeated CBC by 11 runs, while Falcon beat Hellenic by seven wickets. St Andrew’s defeated Prince Edward convincingly by 71 runs, while St John’s (SA) shut out Peterhouse by 68 runs.

The highlight of the play-offs, however, saw St. Georges come up against Cornwall Hill College (SA) in front of a vociferous home crowd. The match ended in a draw as the home side could not defend a fighting 134 runs.  However, they were however judged the winner on account of the bonus points accumulated in the pool stages as per the T-20 tournament rules.

Sunday promises to bring an enthralling conclusion to the tournament with the teams battling to earn the right to play in the Plate and Trophy finals. St. Andrews (SA) and St.Johns (SA) are the favorites to meet in the final, barring an upset from one of the determined Zimbabwean schools.
