The start of the school waterpolo season in Bulawayo was marked by a mini tournament hosted by Christian Brothers’ College on Saturday, September 12, and attended by Girls College and Falcon.
The teams appreciated CBC’s heated pool as the day turned out to be cold and windy, especially at the start of the matches early on Saturday morning.
The first match of the day was the CBC U15Bs versus Girls College U15B which ended, after a highly competitive match, in a score of 7-1.
As the day progressed and the weather warmed up, there was some excellent water polo played by all teams, leading up to the final match of the day and the one everyone had been waiting for: the clash of the two first teams, the CBC Sharks versus the Falcon Guppies.
The Guppies had an early lead, scoring the first goals; however, the Sharks were not intimidated, scoring one goal each in the first, second and third chukkas.
Sharks’ goalkeeper, Kieron Watson, worked hard to keep the Guppies’ ball out of the Sharks’ net, and the fourth chukka was a real nail-biter; the spectators, among them a strong show of support of parents, waited in anticipation to see if the Sharks could recover.
The Guppies came back stronger than before and the final score was 10-3 to Falcon.
The opening of the water polo season was a good day of sportsmanship and competition.
