A Zimbabwean junior handball delegation returned home triumphant from South Africa last week carrying three team golds and one bronze medal from the South African Federation’s Handball Invitational in Johannesburg. Harare Girls High School, coached by Innocent Kanosvova, won the gold medal in the Girls U16 category, while Bradley High School came home with the bronze medal in the Boys U16 category.
Prospect Primary School, known as a handball powerhouse, won gold in both the Boys and the Girls U14 categories. Under Coach Peter Chinyama, the Prospect Primary teams have won medals in regional handball tournaments for the past five years.
The team, composed of sixty four Zimbabwean junior handball players from five teams competed in U14, U16 and U17 age groups for the girls and U14 and U16 for the boys. Teams from Botswana, Swaziland and various Provinces in South Africa took part in the tournament.
Zimbabwe Handball Federation used the South African Invitational Tournament as a selection event to choose U14 and U16 national sides to represent Zimbabwe at the Hanse Tournament in Germany in March 2016. The select sides will join teams from Mashrhino, a student team selected by the Mashonaland West Handball Association, who were already invited to take part in the Hanse.
