Home pool advantage proved not to be an advantage for the First Water Polo Team from Falcon College on Saturday (23 January 2016). The U19 St John’s College Rams beat hosts and favorites from Esigodini, Falcon, 8-3 in a convincing final round victory to lift the Arthur Gower Memorial Trophy.
In the semi-final rounds, the U19 victors who would move into the final match were clear: The St John’s Rams beat Hellenic 11-1, while Falcon dominated CBC 9-2.
The consolation match to determine third and fourth place, between Hellenic Academy and Bulawayo’s Christian Brothers College was an exact repeat of last year’s Gower Memorial final. CBC earned the third place berth with a tight 5-3 victory over Hellenic; last year they beat Hellenic in the final to earn the coveted trophy.
The Arthur Gower Memorial Trophy is a long time weekend competition with six participating boys teams hosted by Falcon College. Peterhouse and St George’s College teams rounded out the six. The weekend competition started Friday afternoon and finished Saturday just before sunset with the announcement of the Zimbabwe U18 team, who stayed to train and practice together on Sunday, 24 January.
On the U15 side, Hellenic beat CBC in the final 5-3, with the U15 side from St George’s dominating Peterhouse 6-1 to earn the third place berth.
These top water polo sides will have another chance at competition this Saturday (30 January 2016) when the Hart Trophy gets under way at CBC in Bulawayo.
