Commissioned only last year, the new water polo pool at Hellenic Academy will host its first international tournament, the African Qualifiers for the FINA World Youth Championships from Thursday through Sunday (11-14 February, 2016).
Neighbouring South Africa is bringing up both women’s and men’s teams for the tournament. Egypt will also have a presence this in Harare this weekend with their men’s team also trying to earn the sole African ticket to the World Youth Championships.
The city of Budva in Montenegro is set to host this year’s FINA World Youth Championships for the men, while New Zealand will host the women’s competition in Auckland. Zimbabwe women’s team featured in the inaugural tournament hosted in Perth, Australia in 2012. Captained by former Chisipite student Sinead Cockroft, Zimbabwe surpassed expectations and played competitively on the world stage, avoiding finishing last in the tournament.
Before we start dreaming about how well Team Zimbabwe will do in Montenegro and New Zealand, the boys and girls representing our nation this weekend have to worry about overcoming South Africa and Egypt to book their tickets to the FINA championships. They deserve our full support – let’s come out in our numbers to wave our flags at Hellenic this weekend.
