Hellenic Academy dominated the Arundel School Invitational Athletics meet yesterday (26 February 2016), winning convincingly with 184 points and breaking eight event records. Chisipite edged out hosts Arundel by just one point to claim second place with 165 points, leaving Arundel in third. Peterhouse was fourth with 158 and Girls High School with 52 points. The annual Arundel meet features girls’ field events as well as the longer 3000m runs and 4×400 relays that are missing from the better known Prince Edward Sprints Challenge two days earlier.
An astounding seventeen records were broken at the invitational, with Hellenic taking eight records, Chisipite five, Arundel three and Peterhouse Girls one. Notable was Hellenic’s Taiya Trivella who demolished the U16 discus record with a massive 31.45 meter throw, the previous record being 22.97. Trivella also broke the U16 shot-put record with an impressive 11 meter throw. Trivella made history with the highest recorded throws for both discus and shot put in any age group at this event. She then went on to win the U16 triple jump.
Hellenic’s Gabrielle de Chassart, recently crowned the winner of the Troutbeck Triathlon, convincingly won the Senior 3000m race, shaving 30 seconds off the record, finishing in 11:38.96. Hayley Clark of Chisipite Senior, broke De Chassart’s former Junior 3000m record, finishing in 11:47.06.
The 4×400 Senior Relay event brought the day to a dramatic close. Chisipite’s team won in 4:22.46, smashing a record held by Arundel since 2013. Sprinter Rutendo Chimbaru, jumped off the school bus after winning 100, 200 and 400m sprints at zonal competitions at Heritage in the morning, to anchor Arundel’s 4×400 team and bring it home during her closing leg from fourth place to a strong second.
