Both the U21 Women’s and Men’s U21 Zimbabwe’s teams won their opening matches today (18 March 2016) against Tanzania with convincing margins at the Junior World Cup Qualifiers being held in Windhoek, Namibia. The women’s side, captained by Stephanie Campbell with Vice Captain Aimee Nativel, held Tanzania to a 6-0 in the first half holding Tanzania to a scoreless defeat with a final score of 18-0.
The men similarly took an early lead against Tanzania to bring the score to 5-0 at the half. Zimbabwe let in one goal in then second half for a full time victory of 10-1.
The qualifying tournament, being held from 18-28 March 2016 includes women’s teams from Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. On the men’s side there is also a team from Egypt in addition to these seven. Those who win will advance to the Junior World Cup Championships which for men take place in New Delhi, India and for women in Santiago, Chile in November.
Whereas Zimbabwe’s U21 women face Namibia in their second match of the qualifying tournament tomorrow, the men’s side have two days to rest before their next match against Nigeria taking place on Monday, 21 March. You can find full team lists here .
