Prince Edward Fall Short of 3rd Consecutive Hammer & Tongues Trophy

Catholic Saints Academy from Mbare were victorious over Prince Edward in a thrilling final at the fourth edition of the Hammer & Tongues Invitational Soccer Tournament  this weekend.  The tournament hosted annually by St George’s College kicked off on Friday (21 May 2016), with a total of 20 soccer teams from eventeen schools and two academies participating. The host school, St George’s fielded two teams, A and B, to bring the total to twenty teams that were then divided into four pools comprising five teams each.

Day One saw the teams playing on a round robin basis in thirty minute matches and by lunch time on Day 2 of the tournament, the top two teams per group had been established to participate in the quarter finals. Pool A winners, St Georges ‘A’ won 2-0 against Pool D second placed team, Falcon High School, while Pool D winners, Masvingo High School edged Pool A second placed Induna High School 1-0.

It was goals galore in the match pitting Pool B winners, Catholic Saints Academy who won 4-1 against Pool C second place holders, St John’s High School. The fourth quarter final saw the inaugural and two time tournament winners, Prince Edward School staging an upset as they booted out the 2015 tournament winners Mufakose 2 High school, by posting an impressive 3-0 win.

In the semi finals Catholic Saints Academy beat St Georges ‘A’ 1-0, with Prince Edward posting a similar scoreline against Masvingo High School. The third and fourth play-off ended 2-2 all between St Georges ‘A’ and Masvingo High School, with Masvingo eventually winning 5-4 on penalties amidst a tension-filled atmosphere.

Prince Edward looked set to clinch a third successive tournament win, having progressed to the finals. However, Catholic Saints Academy were equal to the task as spectators witnessed a brilliant display of skill and talent on the field. The first half ended nil all between the two teams. The second half saw a rejuvenated Catholic Saints Academy raring to go as they cruised past a seemingly faltered Prince Edward School, to clinch the tournament trophy with a fantastic 3-0 win.

The third placed team, Masvingo High School, received $250.00, as second placed Prince Edward were presented with $500.00. Tournament winners, Catholic Saints Academy, walked away with a prize money of $1,000.00 and a generator (5.5 kVA).
