Arundel bounced back to winning ways with a convincing 3-0 win over Dominican Convent on Wednesday, 22 June 2016. The hosts looked more confident on the ball, while the visitors looked more promising on the counter and disciplined in terms of defense.
It did not take time for the Arundel captain, Esther Mano, to get into the game. She read the game well to make an exclusive run down the left flank to square the ball to Tinotenda Chitate, a talented young footballer, who put it past the Convent goalie. From this moment, the Convent girls started knocking for an equalizer, but the tactically-disciplined Arundel side made all their visitors’ efforts fruitless. Convent found themselves on the back foot a few minutes later, as the home side broke on a quick counter attack, again, on the left side of the park.
Captain leading by example; Mano stepped up to make her second assist of the day from the corner kick. She launched a perfect ball into the Convent 18-yard-box; Chitate read the flight of the ball and hit the back of the net for the second time with a wonderful volley.
The Arundel senior team enjoyed a lion’s share of ball possession during the rest of the first half, taking a 2-goal cushion to the break. In the second half, the Convent girls looked more determined to reduce the damage rather than to get goals back. They limited the Arundel girls to just one additional goal in the second half.
In a post-match interview, Mano, the winning Captain, alluded to the bright future of the Arundel soccer team, pointing out that half of the squad is made up of Form Threes and Fours: “Overall, l am happy with the way we have played today and we look forward to the next game.”
